The Bold Sales Methodology

The Bold Sales MethodologyTM by David Craig White is a practical B2B selling system for salespeople who value their time and know when to walk away.

David Craig White presenting The Bold Sales Methodology
The Bold Sales Methodology — a practical approach to confident, strategic B2B selling.

Developed in 2013, the framework behind The Bold Sales Methodology was built around a simple belief:

Salespeople should not behave like desperate vendors chasing every opportunity.

They should think like experienced consultants who charge by the hour.

That means being selective about who they pursue, qualifying opportunities properly, understanding how deals really move, positioning with purpose and closing with confidence.

The methodology is designed to help B2B sellers make better decisions throughout the sales process, reduce wasted selling time and focus their effort on opportunities they can actually win.

What is the Bold Sales Methodology?

The Bold Sales MethodologyTM by David Craig White is a structured approach to B2B selling built around five core principles:

Selective Prospecting
Reverse Qualification
Opportunity Engineering
Tactical Positioning
Assumptive Closing

Together, they provide a practical framework for deciding:

Who should I pursue?
Is this opportunity worth my time?
What needs to happen for this deal to move forward?
How should I position myself, my solution and my commercial terms?
And when the time comes, how do I move confidently towards a decision?

The aim is not to make salespeople more aggressive.

It is to make them more deliberate.

More confident.

More commercially aware.

And far less willing to waste time on opportunities that were never likely to close.

The Five Pillars of the Bold Sales Methodology

1. Selective Prospecting

Not every company deserves to become a prospect.

Selective Prospecting starts with making deliberate choices about where to invest selling time.

Instead of chasing activity for the sake of activity, sellers focus on the companies most likely to have a genuine need, a strong commercial fit and a realistic reason to buy.

That means understanding the ideal customer profile, identifying the right accounts and prioritising quality over volume.

The objective is simple:

Start with better opportunities.

Because poor targeting creates problems that no amount of sales skill can fix later.

2. Reverse Qualification

Traditional qualification often teaches salespeople to prove that an opportunity fits a checklist.

Reverse Qualification takes a different approach.

The seller is not simply trying to qualify the buyer.

The seller is deciding whether the opportunity deserves continued investment.

That means asking difficult questions early.

Is the problem important enough?
Is there a genuine reason to act?
Are the right people involved?
Is there a realistic route to a decision?
Does the buyer value what we offer?

And most importantly:

Is this still worth my selling time?

Bold sellers are prepared to walk away when the evidence says no.

That creates stronger pipelines because weak opportunities are removed rather than carried around for months.

3. Opportunity Engineering

Good opportunities do not simply progress by themselves.

They need to be engineered.

Opportunity Engineering is about understanding the mechanics of the deal and actively shaping the conditions required for it to move forward.

That includes identifying stakeholders, understanding influence, uncovering decision criteria, mapping the buying process, agreeing next steps and exposing potential blockers before they become surprises.

The seller’s job is not to control the buyer.

It is to understand the opportunity well enough to know what needs to happen next.

A strong opportunity should have evidence of progress.

Not hope.

4. Tactical Positioning

Once the opportunity is real, the seller needs to position themselves properly.

Tactical Positioning is about how value, expertise, pricing and commercial terms are presented throughout the deal.

It means understanding what matters most to the buyer and positioning the solution against that.

It also means protecting value.

Bold sellers do not automatically discount just because a prospect asks.

They do not give away concessions without receiving something in return.

They do not allow procurement, competitors or internal pressure to drag them into a weak commercial position.

They think carefully about leverage, packaging, pricing and negotiation.

The objective is not simply to win.

It is to win the right deal on the right terms.

5. Assumptive Closing

Closing should not suddenly begin at the end of the sales process.

By that point, most of the real work should already have been done.

Assumptive Closing is built around progressing the opportunity with confidence and creating small commitments throughout the sales process.

The seller should understand what happens next, what is required from each side and what still stands between the buyer and a decision.

Rather than repeatedly asking:

“Are you ready to buy?”

The seller works from the assumption that a genuine, qualified opportunity should continue moving forward unless there is a reason it should not.

Closing becomes the natural outcome of a well-managed opportunity.

Not a last-minute technique.

The Bold Selling Mindset

The methodology is built around seller behaviour as much as sales technique.

A Bold seller respects the buyer.

But they also respect themselves.

They understand that their time has value.

They are prepared to ask difficult questions.

They are comfortable challenging assumptions.

They do not confuse being consultative with being passive.

They do not chase prospects indefinitely through fear of losing the deal.

And they do not allow buyers to dictate every element of the sales process simply because they are the buyer.

The relationship should be professional.

Not submissive.

That means maintaining commercial equality throughout the sales process.

The buyer is deciding whether they want to buy.

The seller is deciding whether the opportunity is worth pursuing.

Both sides are making a decision.

A Sales Methodology Built Around Better Judgement

Sales methodologies often become overly focused on process, acronyms and CRM fields.

Those things can be useful.

But they do not replace judgement.

Two salespeople can follow exactly the same process and achieve completely different results.

The difference is often the decisions they make.

Which accounts they pursue.

What questions they ask.

Which warning signs they take seriously.

When they challenge.

When they negotiate.

When they walk away.

The Bold Sales Methodology is designed to improve that judgement.

Because stronger sales performance is not always about doing more.

Often, it is about making better decisions with the time you already have.

How the Bold Sales Methodology Fits Into a B2B Sales Process

A sales process describes the stages an opportunity moves through.

A sales methodology describes how the salesperson behaves while moving through those stages.

The Bold Sales Methodology can sit inside an existing sales process rather than replacing it.

For example:

Prospecting
Selective Prospecting

Qualification and Discovery
Reverse Qualification

Opportunity Progression
Opportunity Engineering

Presentation, Proposal and Negotiation
Tactical Positioning

Closing
Assumptive Closing

That means it can work alongside existing systems such as MEDDICC, Sandler, Challenger or company-specific sales processes.

The methodology is not designed to replace every tool a seller already uses.

It provides the principles that guide how those tools should be applied.

Who the Bold Sales Methodology Is For

The Bold Sales Methodology is designed primarily for B2B salespeople working with longer, more complex, multi-stakeholder sales cycles.

That includes:

  • Account Executives
  • Business Development professionals
  • Enterprise and mid-market sellers
  • Experienced B2B sales professionals

Sales leaders looking to improve opportunity quality and seller judgement.

It is particularly useful in environments where salespeople need to manage their time carefully and cannot afford to treat every lead or opportunity equally.

What Makes the Bold Sales Methodology Different

The methodology is not built around increasing activity.

It is not about teaching salespeople to follow buyers obediently through a purchasing process.

And it is not based on the idea that every opportunity can be won if the salesperson simply works hard enough.

Instead, it is built around five ideas:

Be selective about where you invest your time.

Qualify opportunities from the seller’s perspective as well as the buyer’s.

Actively engineer the conditions required for deals to progress.

Position and negotiate deliberately.

Move confidently towards a decision.

The underlying philosophy is simple:

Be selective. Qualify ruthlessly. Engineer the opportunity. Position deliberately. Then closing becomes far easier.

The Role of Existing Sales Methodologies

The Bold Sales Methodology is not based on the belief that every existing methodology is wrong.

Different methodologies contain useful tools.

MEDDICC can help sellers understand opportunity quality in-depth.

Sandler can help create stronger seller-buyer parity.

Challenger can help sellers bring insight and challenge thinking.

SPIN can improve questioning.

The problem begins when salespeople follow any methodology mechanically.

The Bold approach is to use the tools that improve judgement, behaviour and execution while keeping the seller focused on the commercial reality of the opportunity.

Methodology should support judgement.

Not replace it.

The Question Bold Sellers Keep Asking

Throughout the sales process, there is one question that sits underneath the entire methodology:

Is this still worth my selling time?

That question changes behaviour.

It stops sellers from chasing opportunities simply because they exist in the CRM.

It forces them to look for evidence.

It encourages better qualification.

And it gives them permission to walk away when the opportunity no longer makes sense.

That is not giving up.

That is good selling.
